Refraction

Refraction refers to the change in direction of light when passing from one medium to the other. Musically speaking, refraction refers to the constantly changing direction and register in the piece. The music is fragmented, bouncing from instrument to instrument until the ensemble begins to coalesce into a single unit. This climactic moment is punctuated by the piano which continues to play brilliant and fragmented gestures. The ensemble then begins to disintegrate and gradually fades away into silence, until the piano, the main protagonist, has the final say.
