About

The music of composer and conductor Luke Carlson (b. 1983) has been called “personal and strong” (New York Times), “magical”, and “otherworldly” (Philadelphia Inquirer). His compositions have been performed by individuals and ensembles across the country, including the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, the Daedalus String Quartet, Network for New Music, members of the Philadelphia Orchestra, and the Aspen Music Festival.

He is the recipient of the 2013 Jacob Druckman Prize, an orchestral commission (The Burnished Tide) from the Aspen Music Festival, premiered in Aspen under the direction of Robert Spano. Other recent honors include participating in the 2016 Wellesley Composer’s Conference, 2016 Cortona Sessions for New Music, and the 2015 Edward T. Cone Composition Institute.

Network for New Music Commission

Thrilled to be commissioned by NNM to write a new work for strings and percussion in response to artwork at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. The performance will take place in PAFA’s spectacular Rotunda on April 8, 2018. More info here.

Creations for flute, clarinet, violin, cello, percussion, and piano was performed on the “Living Composers” concert on Thursday, June 29 at the Taneycomo Festival in Branson, MO.

Carnegie Hall Premiere
May
2017

Sleep, Comrades, Sleep was premiered by the College of the Ozarks Chorale, Dr. John Cornish conducting, at Carnegie Hall on May 31, 2017. The text by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow honors the sacrifice of our fallen service men and women.

Duo Cortona Prize
July
2016

Sound & Silence for soprano and violin was selected winner of the 2016 Duo Cortona Competition. This new work will be premiered by soprano Rachel Calloway and violinist Ari Streisfeld in their upcoming season (date and location TBD).
